The British Nationality Law is very complex and each case is required to be assessed on its circumstances on an individual basis. We have however below provided brief and basic information of how one is able to become a British Citizen
Naturalisation is the most common way for adults who were not born British to become British Citizens. People who have Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) can, subject to fulfilling residence requirements, apply to naturalise as British Citizens.
The candidate must have been in the United Kingdom at the beginning of the five year period; and In the five year period the candidate must not have been outside the United Kingdom for more than 450 days; and In the last 12 months of the five year period the candidate must not have been outside the UK for more than 90 days; and In the last 12 months of the five year period the candidate's stay in the United Kingdom must have been not subject to any time limit under the immigration laws; and The candidate must not have been in the United Kingdom in breach of the immigration laws at any time in the five-year period. The applicant has sufficient knowledge of the English language and sufficient knowledge about life in the United Kingdom, unless he is under the age of 18 or aged 65 or over at the time he makes his application. British Nationality can also be acquired by way of registration. |
